The SMS Guidance Office offers resources and one-on-one advising to help students explore career paths, post-secondary programs and their own strengths and interests; and guide them through the process of planning for what will come next.
The Guidance Office is a wealth of information for students and parents thinking about the future. Guidance counsellors offer information about post-secondary programs, scholarships and bursaries, application processes, testing, interviews, essays and important deadlines. The Guidance Office also organizes student trips to education and career fairs, career speakers, university information nights, and visits from university and college representatives from major schools across Canada, the US, and abroad.
Academic and guidance counsellors meet with each student one-on-one to discuss her interests and goals after graduation. They help students to research and explore post-secondary programs, prepare entrance requirements, and complete the admissions process.
Academic Advisors are available to assist students with school related matters including course selection, graduation and university entrance requirements.
Learning support staff work with students, teachers, and parents under a team-based, collaborative model to support classroom and subject teachers in providing the best possible learning opportunities for all their students. Direct instruction is available on an individual or small group basis. In some instances, learning support staff work with entire classes of students.
Students may be referred for learning support for a variety of reasons; they may require assistance in a specific subject area, short-term assistance to master specific skills necessary for success in a certain subject or program, or a more enriched course of study. Referrals are usually submitted by subject teachers but can also be made by parents, administrators, or the students themselves, in consultation with the subject teachers.
Peer Tutoring is a free program where students are trained to assist other students in specific academic areas. Students who would like the assistance of a peer tutor must complete a request form and have the request approved by their subject teacher. Then, depending upon the availability of tutors, they will be paired with a peer tutor for a specific period of time.
