Early Learning: Our Junior Kindergarten Program

Early Learning at SMS is a curriculum-based program for Junior Kindergarten (4-year-olds, and a limited number of 3-year-olds) and Kindergarten (5-year-olds). Experienced, nurturing educators provide an emotionally supportive learning environment that piques the natural curiosity of young girls, and experiences that enhance successful learning through play, exploration and social interaction. The program includes the gradual introduction of literacy and numeracy as well as specialist instruction in French, Mandarin in JK, Music, and Physical Education.

St. Margaret’s School’s Early Learning Program is led by a recipient of the Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence in Early Childhood Education. Our dedicated staff are licensed early childhood educators who hold university degrees in education, literature, early childhood education and psychology. Students also benefit from lessons with specialist teachers in French, Mandarin, Physical Education, and weekly visits with the teacher-librarian in our school library.

We believe that fostering positive and respectful relationships with the children is the most important aspect of our work. It is the role of our staff to interact, listen, facilitate, observe and document their learning. Parents are an important part of the learning partnership and we welcome their involvement in the School and our programs.

We encourage you to come for a visit to experience firsthand the programs, educators and learning environment that make our Early Learning Program one-of-a-kind.
